Move by SBS to broadcast 1 A-League match a week next season

Postby Stuckey Fri May 04, 2012 5:48 am

SBS is close to an audacious deal to bring the A-League to free-to-air television by showing a game every week from next season.

The Daily Telegraph understands that Football Federation Australia is close to tying up the long-awaited new broadcast deal to replace the existing pay-TV-only contract which expires next year and SBS are favourites to supply the coveted free-to-air exposure for the Australian domestic league.

The proposed deal would see Fox Sports continue to show four of five games every week, with the fifth and possibly a highlights show on the government-funded network.

I love SBS and everything they have done for the game but I feel that if Ten or another commercial channel went for it, We would get more interest. (As long as they don't do a channel 7and have the highlights show on at 11:30 on a Tuesday night :bang:

One game though. What do you show? The biggest game of the round, the local game or what? With one game you'd want to showcase the best the league has to offer in terms of watchability and atmosphere for people who don't follow A-league to get interested.. But for SA say, we'd only want to see the Reds. Hopefully the game is different in every state and caters to the crowd in that area.

Really, would eliminate the need for fox for me if they showed the reds game each week!!

Still stoked that people will be at least able to catch some A-league on FTA.

One live game a week and a highlights package of the weekends games would be fantastic for FTA in Oz.

Bugger the other FTA stations.
There is only one free to air station that can be trusted with this.

Remember when SBS covered the club world cup and voluntarily covered all 3 of Adelaide United's matches without objection.... I think...

Just read on twitter SBS are getting a rather large increase in their government funding. I wonder if this could help seal the deal?

A least its a start. If it rates well the other networks may start sniffing around as they need content for their digital channels.

SBS = Soccer Broadcasting Service

Has anyone heard anything new about the progress of a FTA deal?
