All over red Rovers

Postby Stuckey Fri Dec 10, 2010 5:00 pm

The plan to set up a Sydney Rovers team in the city’s west is dead ... officially.

Football Federation Australia will open discussions with other interested parties after mutually agreeing with the Rovers consortium not to pursue its bid for a franchise in western Sydney, the governing body said.

FFA remains committed to an A-League franchise in western Sydney and will now engage with other interested investors.

Well thank God thats all over. Now the FFA can start looking at serious bids.

I think there is no point whipping a dead horse the FFA should forget about West Sydney as good as it is (for now) and give the licence to a more worthy area.

Surely Canberra have enough capital for a bid by now.

Is it dead again?
I thought it was already dead.

Oh, well, dead is now really dead.

i read that Tasmanias bid is still waiting in the wings and have arranged meetings with the ffa.

Tassie does not have a team in any national league that i can think of, you would think if they had an a-league team that they would get right on it

Canberra, Canberra, Canberra. It's an obvious choice.

i can only think of their team in the cricket.

i support Canberra's bid, although i'd rather they weren't 'United'... we have too many already. i'd be very happy to see Tassy get a side, but they'd really have to prove they can support a team long term. Canberra i believe will do fantastic as they seem to already have the supporter base and want for a team in their city.

No worries.
Sounds good also!

Yeah Canberra already have a youth league and W-league side. Or South Coast would be good too. They're just upgrading WIN stadium already and they have hosted a few A-league matches.

Tassie i think still have money issues and the rivalry between the North and the South of the island may reduce the support.

No more Uniteds! Come up with you own damn name! Not AU are original but hey!

if canberra get a run im a bit worried its may end up like the whole Queensland situation of spreading support to thin, although i cant see why CCM NJ or SFC fans would defect as they are not exactly geographically close.

Gosford as a city only has 160,000 residents

Canberra has 350,000 on that along i think they deserve a team

Hobart as a city has 212,000

But you can't go past West Sydney's 1.8 million residents!

I feel the West should have had a team from Day One.

I've no idea of the actual population of Gosford (although it's quite small and I'd be astonished if it were anything near that) but the Central Coast region I think is not far less than Canberra? Definitely 300,000ish anyway.

DV - you've been waiting for a Western Sydney team since day 1. At a community level (ie not those active on football forums) do people seem to care that its died?
