Wellington Phoenix A-League coach Ricki Herbert has been hit with a three-match ban for abusing a referee but Melbourne Victory skipper Kevin Muscat must wait until Wednesday to find out his fate for pushing a rival team official.

Herbert's run-in with referee Peter O'Leary in the frenetic finish to his side's 2-1 victory over Adelaide United in Christchurch on Sunday means banishment to the stands for the Phoenix's next three games.

Herbert was sent off as he argued with O'Leary about positioning of a free-kick late in the match, just before his defender Ben Sigmund netted a stoppage-time winner.

The Phoenix have until Tuesday to decide whether to appeal Herbert's heavy penalty from the competition's match review panel.

surely Muscat is looking at at least a week, if not 2. personally i didn't even know Herbert was in trouble. i know i laughed off the incident of him leaving the ground. i thought nothing of it, just looked like a ref who had lost control of a match.

Kinda feel sorry for Herbert. While its not good sport to abuse a ref... that ref definately deserved it.

I think that is a bit harsh considering the 'quality' of the ref. Maybe 1 week, not 3.

Muscat should be rubbed out for a week too!

surely the Nix will definitely challenge this decision now after Muscat got off with nothing at all.

EDIT:
pretty disgraceful looking at his track record...

Makes me feel even more sorry for Herbert getting a 3 match ban just for being vocal, whereas Muscat doesn't get a thing for an actual physical incident
Been downgraded, only needs to spend one game in the stands
