Foxtel powers national Champions League competition!

Postby sevengoals Tue Nov 30, 2010 7:59 am

It's just a damn shame it's the other code...
The 16-team competition - proposed by Pay TV broadcaster Foxtel - would next season feature the top three teams from the SANFL, VFL and WAFL as well as new AFL club Greater Western Sydney, Peel Thunder from the Northern Territory and teams from Tasmania, New South Wales, Queensland and the ACT.

AFL chief executive Andrew Demetriou said he expects to finalise details with all State leagues within two weeks.

This will flop big time,

This will flop big time,
why do you suggest that?

i'm interested to see how it works out, and i'm not a big Australian Rules fan. i can't see anything but positive coming from this.

I do like the idea, but i believe it should have been this way from the start as opposed to the AFL.

without knowing the full details of the league i cant see where the crowd will come from, there are a good number diehard SANFL VFL WAFL etc fans out there , but i just cant see how this will fit in with the AFL and local state leagues..

Glenelg for example, get 2-3k to their SANFL games. Can't see all their casual supporters who can't be bothered going to watch them play in the SANFL showing up to watch them play an interstate team they hadn't heard of before the competition started.

Really? I think the opposite.

I reckon it will be a roaring success.

Spot On.

I'm an eagles fan but i dont get to many games because i have a tonne of things on Saturdays, including work.

Playing a big team from interstate would be worth ensuring i get the day off.

They're going to be played as AFL curtain-raisers aren't they?

Really? In that case it completely negates the potential success of it - unless the plan is to use the curtain raisers in the first instance to raise the profile.

Seanson's post above is exactly my thinking - I haven't been to an SANFL game in years (and that's not likely to change now as I'm living in Queensland these days) but if I were still living in Adelaide I'd be much more likely to go to a 'champions league' or whatever it's going to be called.

Whether is works or not is a moot point.

The question i would ask is why is something like this not in the pipeline or on the discussions table between FFA and Foxtel ( SBS ) ?

Maybe we have put all our eggs in one basket and that basket is called WC2022.

i didn't know that either. that's a bad move. a curtain raiser cements that the matches are merely exhibition games, and no one will be all that interested in them. if they play their cards right, and make the tournament a yearly event and one to be respected, they could turn this into an important part of the Aussie Rules structure and make it connect with the community. and for young stars looking to get drafted, it's a great chance for exposure.

Which "big team" would you like to see?

The top 4 from the VFL were North Ballarat, Northern Bullants, Williamstown & Box Hill? (North Melbourne, Hawthorn, Bulldogs & Carlton's affiliates) wonder how many of their listed players they will allow to play in the new competition? (if the games are played as curtain raisers I can't imagine it being many)

Can't really see teams like Clarence, Swan Districts, Claremont or East Coast Eagles really generating that much interest.

However, people may go watch GWS play.

Could be wrong. The AFL manage to make a success of most things they do.
