I wonder if that's a bit of Bruce's influence? He and Ian Smith took part in Awer's campaign to head back to Kenya to help people.Awer Mabil taking up another cause, mental health.

So wonderful to see him firing for the Socceroos. He has re-energised my passion for the side in a lot of ways. I wouldn't say my hopes for this tournament are sky high but I'm really excited with the changes Arnie has made in the front third. Bringing in Awer and Ikonomidis seems to have made the side look far more likely to score! Crazy to think that if Awer scores once more he'll equal Robbie Kruse's international goal tally. Only problem for Robbie is that he's played 73 games while Awer has played 7....

Last night South Korea defeated China, as they normally do, 2-0 to top group C. China is 2nd and Kyrgystan secured 3rd place with a 3-1 win over the Philippines who are now out of the tournament.
In Group D Iran & Iraq played out a 0-0 draw which leaves Iran on top by goal difference over Iraq. Vietnam claimed 3rd spot after their first win of the tournament with a 2-0 result over Yemen.

Re: 2019 Asian Cup
Two big games tonight. First is Japan v Uzbekistan which will determine our opponent in the round of 16.
The other is Qatar v Saudi Arabia, a game laden with political content. It will be a pro-Saudi crowd though as Qatari fans have been unable to attain visas to attend, which may be a good thing since showing sympathy towards Qatar can attract hefty jail terms https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2017/06/ ... 16087.html

Even though I have never warmed to Arnold I'm quite pleased he has given Mabil and Ikonomidis their chance and that they two young men have exceeded expectations.
Robbie Kruse ...
Promised so much but really did not hit the heights, a bit like Nathan Burns.
I think his time has come.

Half-time and it is 1-1 in the Japan-Uzbek game. Japan have started with 10 different players from the last game so are a bit disjointed in defence and having the odd communication break-down in attack, but are looking more cohesive as the game progresses.

We sure don't have the gumption. Shows the depth of Japanese football.10 changes!

Looks like we have Uzbekistan who play a very direct, narrow brand of football so our CB's will need to be on their toes whilst our fullbacks may have some room to push forward. It would mean that whoever is CM is going to have to make sure they don't leave the CBs exposed.

Re: 2019 Asian Cup
Round of 16 kicked off last night with China defeating Thailand 2-1 in an even contest and Iran doing the job 2-0 over Oman.
Game of the night though was Jordan v Vietnam which finished 1-1 and went to penalties which Vietnam won 4-2. On to the Quarter Finals for the Vietnamese who will play either Japan or Saudi Arabia.

Re: 2019 Asian Cup
Squeaked through in a rather inconvincing manner. Thankfully we have Ryan in goals.Australia through to the quarter-finals after extra time and penalties.
Leckie coming on made quite a difference and I can see him and Giannou starting against UAE.
On that note, UAE managed to get past Kyrgyzstan 3-2 is what sounded like a cracking game.
Japan had a very unconvincing game against Saudi Arabia yet still came through 1-0. There were some interesting refereeing decisions during the game, though thankfully they were all in the middle of the park and not game-defining.
