AUFC season preview

Postby Stuckey Tue Sep 30, 2014 10:13 am

If Josep Gombau’s first season at Adelaide United was about revolution, this year is firmly about evolution.

Great preview, good to some analysis other than the irrelevant and insulting "tiki taka" remarks constantly made in the mainstream football media.
There's more to Adelaide's tactics than just possession and passing.

Sometimes I think football writers base their entire tactical knowledge on the available tactics in Championship Manager 97/98. It's refreshing to see a better breakdown of what Adelaide are striving for, especially seeing how the back 4->3 will help Adelaide avoid the problem of getting bogged while down holding possession in the defensive half.

I like the explanation of how the new players will fit into the side. Good to see how the players were not signed just to fill a position, but were signed with a particular plan in place to make best use of their unique abilities. It shows the Gombau knew what he was looking for.

Adelaide United head into the 2014/15 season with the ceiling raised. A sense of excitement surrounds the club and it’s playing squad, maintaining the enthusiasm and self belief that saw the Reds overcome a trying start to last campaign.

Another preview, this one from everyone's favourite Andy Cussen. :P

Yes very good read indeed. Also not mentioned but I think Cassio can fit into the wing back type role as well. Hoping he plays a solid role for us during the whole season.

Can some one tell me what's Marulanda like as a player? Would he make a solid like for like replacement for Bruce if he couldn't play? I feel Bruce is vital in his hold up role and strength in the box and we don't have any one else that can do the same roles.

Not sure if Marulanda has the same physicality as Bruce (he's not a big guy).
Anthony Costa is the closest we will have to a direct Bruce replacement I think... unless Josh Kennedy decides to come here rather than Heart!
All I need is some tasty waves, a cool buzz, and I'm fine.

I've become more comfortable with the Bruce backup situation as the pre-season has gone on. I think Josep is planning to give Costa a handful of games off the bench this season, more if he shows he's adapting well. I also think Pablo is a more multidimensional player than Jeronimo so in the situation that Bruce isn't available we'll be able to adapt much more readily.

I really liked the Andrew Cusson preview on Football Central. It was well informed, considered and refreshingly free of either bias or hyperbole. I will make sure that I read plenty more of his articles through the coming season.

Josep Gombau’s first season in charge of Adelaide has been a tale of controversy throughout. Despite being voted in as A-League All-Stars coach (and thus, arguably, the most popular manager in the A-League), questions continue to be asked by rival fans and the media as to whether he’s a genius or a farce.
